Percussionist Stephane Seva of the Paris Washboard plays with a New York version of his all-star band at The Bickford Theater, Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Stéphane Séva is not a traditional washboard player. His instrument has a horizontal undulating surface, with several attachments that make other percussive sounds. He is an outstanding rhythm player, who sings occasionally too, adding to the versatility of the group.

New York Washboard duplicates the instrumentation of its French counterpart. At the Bickford, Dan Levinson will play clarinet; Matt Musselman will play slide trombone; Gordon Webster plays the big Kawai grand piano.

Paris Washboard’s new album

Stéphane joined internationally-renowned jazz band “Paris Washboard” in 2007. The quartet features one of the world’s best stride piano players, Louis Mazetier (Dick Hyman’s alter ego!), Daniel Barda on trombone and Alain Marquet on clarinet. Stéphane has made a number of recordings and performed at countless festivals (Edinburgh, Costa Mesa, Marciac, Monségur, Fribourg, etc.). He is also a regular performer at the big Paris jazz clubs (Caveau de la Huchette, Petit Journal, Duc des Lombards, etc.). Paris Washboard’s latest album is a live recording from last summer’s Monségur International Jazz Festival in France and will be released by the label Black & Blue in June 2010 (www.myspace.com/pariswashboard).
